Best Areas to Stay for Paris Marathon

The Paris Marathon starts on the Champs-Élysées and finishes on Avenue Foch, near the Arc de Triomphe. Staying in western central Paris is therefore a practical choice if you want to avoid long journeys before or after the race.

The best area depends on whether you prefer to be close to the start, have a shorter walk back after finishing or stay somewhere with more space and facilities.

Champs-Élysées – Best for the Start

Staying near the Champs-Élysées makes race morning relatively straightforward. Depending on your hotel, you may be able to walk to the start area without using public transport.

The neighbourhood has plenty of restaurants, shops and metro connections. However, hotels close to the famous avenue can be expensive, particularly during major events.

Aerial view of the Champs-Élysées and Arc de Triomphe

Arc de Triomphe & Étoile – Best for Start and Finish

The area around the Arc de Triomphe is one of the most practical places to stay for the Paris Marathon. It sits between the Champs-Élysées start area and the finish on Avenue Foch.

Several hotels are within walking distance of both locations, making this a good choice for runners who want to keep travel simple throughout race weekend.

Keep in mind that road closures and barriers around the Arc de Triomphe may affect walking routes on marathon day.

Trocadéro – Best for Apartment Stays

Trocadéro is worth considering if you prefer a studio or apartment rather than a traditional hotel room. Having a kitchenette can be useful for preparing your usual breakfast or pre-race meals.

The neighbourhood is also close to the Eiffel Tower and offers good metro connections for sightseeing.

The trade-off is a longer walk to the marathon start and finish compared with hotels around the Arc de Triomphe.

George V & Golden Triangle – Best for Luxury Hotels

The streets around Avenue George V and the Golden Triangle are home to some of Paris’s best-known luxury hotels and smaller upscale properties.

This area is close to the Champs-Élysées, making it convenient for reaching the marathon start on foot. Some hotels also offer spa or wellness facilities if you want a more comfortable stay.

Accommodation here generally comes at a higher price, but the location works well for runners who want to combine the marathon with a luxury weekend in Paris.

Getting to the Paris Marathon Start

The Paris Marathon starts on the Champs-Élysées, with runners setting off in different waves according to their expected finish time. You’ll need to reach the correct entrance for your assigned starting group, so check the official race instructions before heading out.

Walking to the Start

For our hotel comparisons, we’ve used Rue de Berri as a reference point. Your actual walking distance may vary depending on your assigned entrance and any road closures.

If you’re staying near the Champs-Élysées or Arc de Triomphe, walking is generally the easiest option. Allow extra time for crowds, security checks and finding your starting corral.

Taking the Metro

If your hotel is further away, the Paris Métro can be a convenient alternative. However, stations near the Champs-Élysées may have restricted access or temporary closures on race day. Check the latest transport information before travelling.

Race Morning Tips

  • Check your assigned start wave and entrance before race day.
  • Allow extra time to reach your starting corral.
  • Don’t assume you can cross the Champs-Élysées wherever you like.
  • Check metro station access if you’re using public transport.

IMPORTANT
The exact start entrances, wave arrangements and road closures for the Paris Marathon 2027 should be confirmed with the official race information closer to the event.

After the Finish: Exits, Bag Collection & Getting Back to Your Hotel

The Paris Marathon finishes on Avenue Foch, not far from the Arc de Triomphe. However, crossing the finish line doesn’t mean you can immediately leave the race area. Runners are directed through a designated exit system, which can add some distance to the walk back to their hotel.

Understanding the Finish Exits

The marathon has previously used two main exit routes:

  • Exit A (Sortie A): For runners without bags to collect.
  • Exit B (Sortie B): For runners using the baggage storage service.

These exits lead to different points around Avenue Foch, so the most convenient route back to your hotel depends on which one you use.

For our hotel comparisons, we’ve calculated walking times from exit B, rather than directly from the finish line. This gives runners using the baggage service a more realistic idea of the journey back to their accommodation.

Collecting Your Bag

If you plan to use the official baggage service, check the organiser’s instructions for where and when to drop off your bag before the race.

After finishing, follow the signs towards baggage collection and the appropriate exit. Keep in mind that collecting your belongings and leaving the finish area may take some time, especially when large numbers of runners finish close together.

Getting Back to Your Hotel

After 42.2 km, even a relatively short walk can feel long. This is one reason why staying near Avenue Foch or the Arc de Triomphe can be particularly convenient.

If your hotel is further away, public transport may be an option, but don’t assume the nearest metro entrance will be accessible. Temporary station closures, crowds and road restrictions can affect your route.

Paris Marathon Hotel FAQ

Is it better to stay near the start or finish of the Paris Marathon?

Ideally, choose a hotel within walking distance of both. Staying near the Arc de Triomphe is particularly convenient because the marathon starts on the Champs-Élysées and finishes on Avenue Foch. If you have to choose, a shorter walk after the finish may be more valuable than saving a few minutes on race morning.

For runners travelling to Paris, three nights is a good option. Arriving on Friday gives you Saturday to collect your race bib, prepare for the marathon and rest before Sunday’s race. Staying until Monday also means you won’t have to rush to the airport immediately after finishing.

Some hotels may be able to arrange an early breakfast or takeaway option, but this isn’t guaranteed. Ask your hotel before booking, particularly if you have an early starting wave. An apartment with kitchen facilities is another option if you prefer to prepare your own food.

It’s worth looking for accommodation as soon as your race plans are confirmed. Hotels in convenient locations can become expensive or sell out as the event approaches. Compare cancellation policies carefully, especially if you’re booking several months in advance.
