Other than being a 10 kilometer race, the Peachtree Road Race is also a top Atlanta social event. Thousands of athletes and spectators come to the city and stay at the best hotels in anticipation of the main drag down on Peachtree Street.

When the Peachtree Road Race began in 1970, only 110 athletes and no spectators save for a few nonchalant pedestrians.

This is a far cry from today’s 60,000 runners who surge down Atlanta’s Peachtree Street for the 6.2-mile Road Race.

It takes over 500 race volunteers to coordinate the start of this famous event. By the time the last group passes the starting line, nearly an hour has elapsed, and the winner finished 20 minutes ago.
