About the Marathon

Boston Downtown from Air
Downtown Boston

Originally a local event, the Boston Marathon has increased in status and fame to attract participants from around the world. Most of the race’s history featured money free entrants with the winning award made of an olive branch wreath, that’s until corporate sponsorship enables cash prizes from the 1980s, and professional athletes started thronging the marathon.

This race is open to all runners that meet qualifying conditions, such as being 18 years or older and completing a timed standard marathon course.

Traditionally held on patriot’s day, the Boston Marathon is one of the iconic events in Boston for that holiday, observed every third Monday of April and aptly known as ‘Marathon Monday.’

Hosted in conjunction with other Greater Boston cities, the marathon began in 1987 after the successful completion of the city’s summer Olympics in 1986 and is organized by the Boston Athletic Association.

This marathon started with 15 participants but has managed to set the world record for its 1996 attendance of 30,708 entrants, 35,868 of whom finished the race.
