Many of the top rated hotels in Ypres are located in the heart of the city centre. That’s because it’s where you’ll find most of Ypres best historical and family friendly attractions. There’s so much history to be found in the city centre, for example, Grote Markt, the central town square. This bustling area is Ypres’ historical centre of trade, and you’ll still find plenty of interesting shops there today. It has recently been redeveloped, but the classic Flemish architecture that so many visitors flock to see has been maintained. The square is home to a traditional market on Saturdays too, and hosts many events thoughout the year, like the Ypres Tattoo, the 24-hour interntational car rally and a special festive market over the Christmas period. Another attraction of Ypres city center is the Cloth Hall. This beautiful medieval buildng was the center of cloth trading in the Middle Ages. Although it was mostly destroyed during the war, it has been beautifully restored to its original condition. There are many great photo opportunities to be had at this picturesque site, including the Belfry tower and Renaissance era Nieuwerck extension. Ypres is also a chocolate lovers paradise, with artisan chocolatiers selling their wares all over the city centre. A box of Belgian chocolate – known the world over to be the best – is the ideal gift to take home for your family and friends.

What are the Top Hotels near Menin Gate?
![Ypres city centre and Menin Gate](https://www.hotelfollower.com/wp-content/uploads/ypres-city-centre-menin-gate.jpg)
The Menin Gate in the centre of Ypres has a long history. Originally it was part of the fortifications around the city, designed to keep its residents safe from attack. It also served as a crossing point over the moat, along the road to the town of Menin. However, since 1914 it has since taken on a far greater significance, as it was here, duing the Great War, that thousands of soldiers passed through on their way to the Ypres Salient, a vital part of the Western Front. Many of those troops would never return home. Now the site is home to one of the most beautiful and most resonant World War One memorials. Designed by the architect Sir Reginal Blomfeld in the classic Roman triumphal style, it was at the inaugration ceremony in 1927 that the Last Post was first played at the gate by buglars from the Somerset Light Infantry. This tradition has held fast, and come rain or shine the song is played by buglars every night at 8pm. It is a truly emotional experience to hear the buglars playing, as you read the names of the some 55,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers who died on the battlefield engraved into the Portland Stone walls. The final resting places of these men is not known; the Menin Gate therefore, serves as their tombstone and memorial.

What’s the Top Accommodation near Flanders Field?
![Tyne Cot Cemetary in Ypres](https://www.hotelfollower.com/wp-content/uploads/tyne-cot-cemetary-ypres.jpg)
Flanders Fields was the scene of much of the conflict in Belgium during World War One. It is here that one million soldiers from more than 50 countries wither died or disappeared between 1914 and 1918. Lest we ever forget, Flanders Fields is now dedicated to those fallen soldiers, the home of many important cemetaries and memorials where you can come to pay your respects. The Trench of Death museum recalls the history of the infamous trenches of World War One. There are contemporary photos and film footage of the fighting in the trenches and personal stories told by soldiers on both sides. It is haunting and touching. The In Flanders Fields Museum, named after the famous war time poem, tells the entire story of the war as it happened in the area. Visitors to the museum will be granted entry to the Belfry, from where they can look down over the city, and the battlefields that still surround it, although all is peacful there now. There are also many cemeteries in the Flanders Fields area where you can pay tribute. Tyne Cot Cemetary is probably the most famous, and as the resting place of nearly 12,000 fallen British soldiers, it’s the biggest cemetary in the world for the victims of any war. Many nationalities came to fight in Flanders fields though; you can also visit an American cemetary, two German cemetaries and many others in the area. It is not morbid, to visit these places, but a worthwhile tribute, and a lesson that we must continue to learn from.
