Where to Stay for the Chicago Marathon: Best Areas for Runners

Choosing where to stay for the Chicago Marathon can make a big difference on race day. The race starts and finishes in Grant Park, but simply booking a hotel somewhere nearby doesn’t always tell you how easy it will be to reach your runner entrance in the morning.

The runner gates are located along Michigan Avenue, which means the exact part of downtown Chicago you stay in matters. A hotel on the eastern side of the Loop can offer a very different race-morning walk from one farther west, even though both may be listed in the same neighborhood.

In this guide, we look beyond the usual neighborhood names and focus on the parts of Chicago that make the most sense for runners, including Michigan Avenue opposite Grant Park, the eastern Loop, northern South Loop and the area around the Chicago River.

If you already know where you want to stay, see our Best Hotels for the Chicago Marathon guide for specific hotel recommendations and walking times to the runner gates.

Best Areas for the Chicago Marathon

Chicago neighborhood names can be quite broad. For marathon runners, the exact part of an area matters, especially when it comes to walking to the runner gates in Grant Park. These are the four locations we would consider first.

BEST FOR THE SHORTEST RACE-MORNING WALK

Michigan Avenue Opposite Grant Park

Stay directly opposite Grant Park, on the edge of the eastern Loop and northern South Loop, for the shortest walk to the runner gates.

BEST ALL-ROUND AREA

Eastern Loop

Close to Grant Park, restaurants and central Chicago. For easier race-day access, stay toward Michigan Avenue or Wabash Avenue.

BEST FOR A QUIETER STAY

Northern South Loop

A slightly quieter alternative to the Loop while still within walking distance of Grant Park. Stay toward the northern end for easier race-day access.

BEST FOR CITY LIFE

Chicago River & Southern River North

A central base for restaurants and sightseeing while keeping Grant Park walkable. For runners, stay close to the Chicago River rather than farther north.

GOOD TO KNOW FOR 2026

The Chicago Marathon uses designated runner entrance gates along Michigan Avenue on race morning. Your recommended entrance depends on your assigned start corral, so walking times can vary slightly depending on your gate.

When comparing the areas below, we focus on practical walking access to the runner entrances, rather than simply the distance to Grant Park.

1. Michigan Avenue Opposite Grant Park – Best for the Shortest Race-Morning Walk

Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park Chicago IL

Staying along or just off Michigan Avenue opposite Grant Park puts you as close as possible to the marathon area. This stretch sits on the edge of the eastern Loop and northern South Loop, which is why we treat it as a practical runner location rather than a separate Chicago neighborhood.

The main advantage is race morning. The runner entrance gates are located along Michigan Avenue, so hotels here can offer a very short walk to your assigned gate.

OUR TAKE
Choose this area if race-day convenience is your main priority and you want to keep your walk to the runner gates as short as possible.

2. Eastern Loop – Best All-Round Area

Chicago and Grant Park View

The eastern side of the Loop is a good choice if you want to stay close to Grant Park without limiting yourself to hotels directly opposite the park. For runners, we would focus on the area toward Michigan Avenue and Wabash Avenue, rather than farther west in the Loop.

You’ll still be within walking distance of the runner gates, while having a wide choice of restaurants, public transport and downtown attractions nearby. This makes the Eastern Loop particularly useful if you are combining the marathon with a few days in Chicago.

OUR TAKE
Choose the Eastern Loop if you want a central Chicago stay with good race-morning access, while still being well placed for sightseeing before or after the marathon.

3. Northern South Loop – Best for a Quieter Stay

The northern part of South Loop is a good alternative if you prefer to stay slightly outside the busiest part of downtown while keeping Grant Park within walking distance. For runners, location within the neighborhood matters: hotels closer to the northern end give you easier access to the marathon area.

South Loop has a more residential feel than the Loop, while still offering restaurants, cafés and good connections around Chicago. It can also be a useful choice if you prefer a little more space and a less central setting during your stay.

OUR TAKE
Choose Northern South Loop if you want a slightly quieter base while still being able to walk to the runner gates on race morning.

BEST FOR

Quieter stays · Couples & families · Residential feel

4. Chicago River & Southern River North – Best for City Life

Chicago River North neighborhood
The area around the Chicago River and southern end of River North is a good choice if you want to combine the marathon with more of the Chicago city experience. This area has a wide choice of restaurants, cafés and hotels, with the Riverwalk and Michigan Avenue nearby. Stay toward the southern end of River North if you want to keep the walk to the runner gates relatively short.

OUR TAKE
Choose this area if you want to combine the marathon with a lively central Chicago stay, while still keeping Grant Park within walking distance.

Choosing the Right Area for Your Chicago Marathon Stay

LOOK BEYOND THE NEIGHBORHOOD NAME

The Loop, South Loop and River North cover fairly large areas. For runners, the exact location within the neighborhood can matter more than the neighborhood name itself.

CHECK THE WALK TO THE RUNNER GATES

The marathon uses designated runner entrances along Michigan Avenue. Check the walking route to these gates rather than simply measuring the distance to Grant Park.

KNOW WHICH PART OF THE AREA WORKS BEST

In the Loop, we favour the eastern side. In South Loop, staying toward the northern end keeps you closer to the marathon area, while in River North we would look closer to the Chicago River.

THINK BEYOND RACE MORNING

If you’re spending several days in Chicago, consider the rest of your stay too. A slightly longer walk on race morning may be worthwhile if you prefer easier access to restaurants, sightseeing or a quieter setting.
