Choosing a hotel for the Tokyo Marathon 2027 comes down to one important decision: would you rather stay near the start in Shinjuku or closer to the finish around Tokyo Station?
The race starts at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku and finishes in Marunouchi, near Tokyo Station. Staying near the start means less travelling on race morning, while a hotel near the finish can make the journey back easier after 42.2 kilometres.
We’ve selected eight hotels in Tokyo, looking beyond their distance to the start and finish lines. We also checked walking routes to the start-area gates using previous Tokyo Marathon maps and considered the different routes runners may need to follow after finishing. These details can make a real difference when choosing where to stay.

Should You Stay Near the Start or Finish of the Tokyo Marathon?
Unlike marathons that start and finish in the same area, the Tokyo Marathon begins in Shinjuku and ends in Marunouchi, near Tokyo Station. Where you stay can make quite a difference on race day.
Staying Near the Start in Shinjuku
Hotels around Nishi-Shinjuku are a good choice if you want to walk to the start area in the morning. You’ll have less to worry about when getting ready for the race, particularly if you prefer not to use public transport before running.
The downside is that you’ll need to travel back to Shinjuku after finishing the marathon.
Staying Near the Finish in Marunouchi or Otemachi
Staying near Tokyo Station, Marunouchi or Otemachi means travelling to Shinjuku before the race, but potentially having a shorter journey back to your hotel afterwards.
Keep in mind that runners follow designated routes after crossing the finish line. Depending on your assigned exit, the walk back to your hotel may be longer than it appears on a map.
Our Take: If avoiding transport on race morning is your priority, choose Nishi-Shinjuku. If you’d rather be closer to your hotel after running 42.2 kilometres, look at Marunouchi, Otemachi or Hibiya.
Our Recommended Hotels for Tokyo Marathon

We’ve selected eight hotels in two main areas: Shinjuku, near the start, and Marunouchi, Otemachi and Hibiya, near the finish. Each has its own advantages depending on your budget, preferred location and race-day plans.
Below, we look at what each hotel offers and what runners should know before booking.
Tokyo Marathon 2027: Start Gate Access at a Glance
We checked walking routes from four hotels in Nishi-Shinjuku to nearby start-area gates, using previous Tokyo Marathon maps.
| Hotel | Nearest gate | Approx. walk |
|---|---|---|
| Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo | Gate 1 / 2 | 1 / 2 min |
| Hyatt Regency Tokyo | Gate 1 | 7 min |
| Shinjuku Washington Hotel Annex | Gate 4 | 4 min |
| Park Hyatt Tokyo | Gate 4 / 5 | 4 min |
Walking times are approximate and based on previous Tokyo Marathon start-area maps. Runners must use their assigned gate, which may be farther away. Official 2027 arrangements may differ. Gate 5 is on an upper level.
Returning to Shinjuku After the Marathon
All four Shinjuku hotels require a journey back from the finish area in Marunouchi. Depending on your assigned post-race exit, you’ll first need to make your way to a nearby station before travelling back to Shinjuku. Allow some extra time for this, as the route may involve additional walking after the race.

How We Selected These Hotels

We looked beyond hotel ratings and distance to the start or finish line. For the Tokyo Marathon, the location of your hotel matters, but so does the route you’ll actually need to take on race day.
START ACCESS
We considered walking routes to the designated start-area gates in Shinjuku, rather than simply measuring the distance to the starting line.
POST-FINISH LOCATION
We looked at where runners are directed after the finish. These routes vary by bib colour, so a hotel close to the finish line isn’t necessarily the easiest to reach afterwards.
TRANSPORT CONNECTIONS
We considered how runners can travel between their hotel and the start or finish areas, particularly when staying on the opposite side of the course.
COMFORT & VALUE
We included different types of accommodation, from more affordable hotels to luxury rooms and serviced apartments, to suit different budgets and preferences.
How Early Should You Book?
If you’re planning to run the Tokyo Marathon 2027, it’s worth looking at hotels as early as possible, especially if you want to stay within walking distance of the start in Shinjuku or near the finish in Marunouchi.
Hotels in these areas can become expensive around race weekend, and waiting until your travel plans are finalised may leave you with fewer options.
OUR TIP
Entered the Tokyo Marathon lottery? Start comparing hotels early. If you find a suitable room with free cancellation, you can reserve it while waiting for your race entry to be confirmed. Always check the cancellation deadline and conditions before booking.
If you’ve already secured your entry, it’s worth booking your preferred hotel rather than waiting for a last-minute deal.

Tokyo Marathon Hotel FAQ
Is it better to stay near the start or finish of the Tokyo Marathon?
It depends on what matters most to you. Staying in Nishi-Shinjuku allows you to walk to the start area, while a hotel in Marunouchi, Otemachi or Hibiya may be more convenient after the race. Remember that runners follow designated post-finish routes, so the closest hotel to the finish line isn’t always the easiest to reach.
Which Tokyo Marathon hotels are within walking distance of the start?
Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo, Hyatt Regency Tokyo, Shinjuku Washington Hotel Annex and Park Hyatt Tokyo are all within walking distance of the start area in Nishi-Shinjuku. However, your actual walking route depends on your assigned entrance gate.
Can I walk back to my hotel after finishing the Tokyo Marathon?
Possibly, if you’re staying around Marunouchi, Otemachi or Hibiya. However, runners are directed along different post-finish routes depending on their bib colour. You may have to walk farther than expected, even if your hotel appears close to the finish line on Google Maps.
Is an apartment hotel a good option for Tokyo Marathon runners?
Yes, particularly if you prefer preparing your own meals. Ascott Marunouchi Tokyo offers apartment-style accommodation, with kitchen facilities in many room categories. This can be useful if you want to prepare a familiar breakfast before the race.
Should I book a refundable hotel for the Tokyo Marathon?
A refundable rate is worth considering, especially if you’re still waiting for your race entry to be confirmed. Check the cancellation deadline carefully, as free cancellation may only be available until a specific date. Also compare the refundable and non-refundable prices before deciding.
