Where to Stay for the Rome Marathon

For the Rome Marathon, the area around Circo Massimo and the Colosseum is one of the most convenient places to stay. You can walk to the runner entrance on race morning and return to your hotel without relying on public transport after the finish.

However, there are a few other areas worth considering, depending on your budget and how much time you plan to spend exploring Rome.

Circo Massimo and Aventino

This is our preferred area for runners who want to stay close to the race.

Hotels around Circo Massimo and Aventino are within walking distance of the runner entrance at Piazza di Porta Capena. The area is also convenient for returning to your hotel after finishing the marathon.

Aventino is generally quieter than the busy streets around the Colosseum, which may appeal to runners looking for a more peaceful stay.

Circus Maximus, finish area of the Rome Marathon

Colosseum and Palatine Hill

Staying near the Colosseum puts you close to one of Rome’s most famous landmarks and within walking distance of the marathon area.

However, not every hotel near the Colosseum is equally convenient. The runner entrance is on the southern side, at Piazza di Porta Capena, so hotels on the northern side may involve a longer walk than expected.

It’s worth checking the route to the actual runner entrance rather than simply measuring the distance to the Colosseum.

Velabro and Bocca della Verità

This small area between Circo Massimo and the historic centre is another good option.

You’ll find hotels within walking distance of the race area, while sights such as the Roman Forum, Capitoline Hill and the Tiber are nearby.

It’s a good compromise if you want a convenient marathon location without staying directly beside the Colosseum.

Isola Tiberina and the Historic Centre

If you’re planning a longer stay in Rome, the area around Tiber Island is worth considering.

You’ll be close to Trastevere, the Jewish Ghetto and many of Rome’s historic sights, with plenty of restaurants nearby.

The walk to the marathon area is longer than from Circo Massimo, but still manageable from some hotels. For runners travelling with family or combining the marathon with sightseeing, this may be a better fit.

Good to know: Not all rooms have a kitchen. You’ll need to book one of the suites if you want self-catering facilities.

After the finish: Around 9 minutes on foot back to the hotel.

BEST LUXURY STAY

Hotel Palazzo Manfredi ★★★★★

Hotel Palazzo Manfredi is a five-star boutique hotel overlooking the Colosseum. It’s one of the more expensive options in our selection, but a good choice if you want to treat yourself to a luxury stay during the Rome Marathon weekend.

The hotel is known for its Colosseum views, elegant rooms and rooftop dining at the Michelin-starred Aroma restaurant. The 25 m² room we checked offers a comfortable amount of space, although views and room layouts depend on the category you book.

WHY IT WORKS FOR RUNNERS

Good to know: Not every room has a direct Colosseum view. Check the room category carefully if the view is an important reason for booking.

Rome Marathon 2027: Getting to the Start and Back from the Finish

Rome Colosseum, start area of the marathon

One thing to know when booking a hotel for the Rome Marathon is that the start line and the runner entrance are not in the same place.

The race starts on Via dei Fori Imperiali, near the Colosseum, but runners entered the start area through Piazza di Porta Capena, at the end of Via di San Gregorio, in 2026. This is the location we’ve used to calculate the walking times from our recommended hotels.

Getting to the Runner Entrance

If you’re staying near Circo Massimo, Aventino or the southern side of the Colosseum, walking is generally the simplest way to reach the start area.

In 2026, runners entered through designated gates on Via di San Gregorio, according to their assigned starting corrals. Access was restricted, so approaching the start line directly from Via dei Fori Imperiali was not an option.

For hotels farther away, Circo Massimo Metro Station (Line B) is another possibility, although public transport arrangements and road closures should be checked closer to race day.

Bag Drop Before the Race

In 2026, the official baggage trucks were located along Viale delle Terme di Caracalla and Via Valle delle Camene, around five minutes’ walk from the runner entrance.

Runners were required to use the official race bag provided by the organisers. If you’re staying at one of the nearby hotels, you may prefer to leave your belongings in your room and head straight to the start.

Getting Back to Your Hotel After the Finish

The Rome Marathon finishes at Circo Massimo (Circus Maximus).

After crossing the finish line, runners continue through the designated finish area to collect their medal and refreshments before leaving through the official exit.

On the 2026 course map, this exit was on the eastern side of Circus Maximus, around four minutes’ walk from the runner entrance at Piazza di Porta Capena.

That’s why we’ve also included the walking time from the finish exit to each hotel, rather than measuring from the finish line itself.

For several of our recommended hotels, the walk back is under ten minutes. After 42.2 km, that can be a real advantage.

Important Information for 2027

The access routes, baggage arrangements and finish exit described above are based on the 2026 Rome Marathon instructions. The organisers may make changes for 2027, so runners should follow the official race information when it becomes available.

Rome Marathon Hotel FAQ

What is the best area to stay for the Rome Marathon?

Circo Massimo, Aventino and the area south of the Colosseum are among the most convenient locations for runners. Several hotels here are within a 5–15 minute walk of the runner entrance, and the return journey after the race is relatively short.

Yes, if you choose a hotel close to the race area. All seven hotels in our guide are within approximately 20 minutes’ walk of the runner entrance at Piazza di Porta Capena, based on the 2026 access arrangements.

Ideally, both. In Rome, the runner entrance and finish exit are relatively close together, so staying near Circo Massimo works well before and after the race. Il Monastero Collection and Fauno Urban Resort are particularly convenient for both.

That depends on your usual race-day routine. If you need to eat several hours before the start, check whether the hotel serves breakfast early enough. A room or suite with a kitchen, such as those available at Palazzo Velabro, gives you more control over what and when you eat.
