How Early Should You Book?
Berlin Marathon weekend is popular, so we wouldn’t leave booking your hotel until the last minute. The best-located hotels and preferred room types can become harder to find as race weekend gets closer.
If you’ve entered the lottery, it can be worth reserving a well-located hotel with free cancellation before you know the result. Check the cancellation conditions carefully, especially the deadline for cancelling without charge. If you don’t get a race entry, you can cancel the room within that period.
If you prefer to wait, start looking as soon as your race entry is confirmed. We would focus more on finding the right location with flexible cancellation than waiting for a possible last-minute deal. Hotel prices change constantly, and waiting may simply leave you with fewer convenient options.
OUR TIP
Entered the lottery? Start comparing hotels early. If you find the right one with free cancellation, reserving it can give you more choice without committing to a non-refundable stay.
What to Look for in a Marathon Hotel
Choosing a marathon hotel is a little different from booking a normal city break. Location matters, but a few practical details can make race weekend much easier.
Early breakfast
Breakfast times can change during marathon weekend, and some hotels may offer special arrangements for runners. If an early breakfast is important to you, check what your hotel is offering for race morning.
Flexible cancellation
If you’re booking early, a flexible or free-cancellation rate gives you more freedom if your race or travel plans change. Always check the cancellation deadline before booking.
A quiet room
A good night’s sleep before the marathon is worth planning for. Consider requesting a room away from lifts, bars, busy streets or other potentially noisy areas.
Luggage storage & late checkout
Luggage storage can be particularly useful if you arrive before check-in or leave Berlin later in the day. A late checkout after the marathon can be convenient too, but availability is never guaranteed.
Kitchen facilities
A room or apartment with a kitchen can be useful if you prefer to prepare your own familiar food before the race, especially when travelling with family or staying several nights.
Location on race day
Don’t judge distance by the Brandenburg Gate alone. The Berlin Marathon start and finish area is large, so the actual walk between your hotel and the runner entrance or exit may be longer than it appears on a map.
Which Part of Berlin Should You Stay In?

Your ideal area depends on what matters most to you during marathon weekend. Mitte and the Brandenburg Gate area put you close to the race action, while Tiergarten, Hauptbahnhof and other central neighbourhoods can offer a good balance of location, transport and price.
We compare the different neighbourhoods, their advantages for runners and who they suit best in our separate guide.
Common Hotel Booking Mistakes
A hotel that works well for a normal city break isn’t always the best choice for marathon weekend. These are a few things worth checking before you book.
Choosing a hotel based on price alone
A cheaper hotel far from the race area may mean an earlier start, more time on public transport and extra walking on race morning. Always compare the location as well as the room rate.
Assuming “near Brandenburg Gate” means near your entrance
The start and finish area covers a large part of Tiergarten. Check the official race information before assuming the hotel that looks closest on the map will give you the shortest walk.
Forgetting about breakfast times
Your hotel may include breakfast, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it starts early enough on marathon morning. Check the serving times or have an alternative plan.
Booking a non-refundable rate too early
A low rate can be tempting, especially before your race entry is confirmed. If your plans aren’t certain yet, paying a little more for free cancellation can be the safer option.
Relying on taxis on race morning
Road closures and the number of people travelling to the event can make taxis less practical. A hotel you can reach the start from on foot or by public transport is usually a better choice.

Berlin Marathon Hotel FAQ
Is it better to stay near the Berlin Marathon start or finish?
The start and finish are both in the Tiergarten and Brandenburg Gate area, so you don’t really need to choose between them. What matters more is how easily you can reach the runner entrance before the race and leave the event area afterwards. Keep in mind that the start and finish area is much larger than it may appear on a map.
Can I walk from my hotel to the Berlin Marathon start?
Yes, if you stay in areas such as Mitte, Tiergarten or around Berlin Hauptbahnhof, walking may be possible and can be easier than using public transport on race morning. Always check the official start-area map before the race, as the runner entrance may not be the point closest to your hotel.
Is Berlin Hauptbahnhof a good place to stay for the marathon?
Yes. Berlin Hauptbahnhof is a practical base for marathon weekend, especially if you arrive by train. You’ll have excellent public transport connections and the marathon area is within walking distance. It can also be convenient when leaving Berlin after the race.
Should spectators stay in the same hotel as the runner?
Usually, yes. There’s little reason to book separate hotels. Spectators can use Berlin’s public transport to move between viewing points during the race, while staying together makes the rest of marathon weekend much easier. A central hotel also gives both runners and spectators more flexibility.
Is late checkout worth requesting after the Berlin Marathon?
It can be, especially if you’re travelling home on race day. Having access to your room after the marathon gives you time to shower and change before leaving. Late checkout is usually subject to availability and may cost extra, so ask your hotel in advance rather than relying on it.
